Strategies

Niche Credit Through Asset-Based Lending

Our strategy is built around corners of the credit market characterised by pricing and market inefficiencies, where capital deployment is structurally underweight relative to demand. This creates opportunities for enhanced risk-adjusted returns and diversification through exposure to niche credit.

We deploy capital within asset-based lending, principally across two sub-strategies: specialty finance and debt purchase. Each vertical carries its own return drivers, underwriting discipline and risk profile.

The Asset-Based Lending Opportunity

Asset-based lending is secured against identifiable assets and repaid from their cash flows. Each exposure is originated and structured directly, so returns reflect the quality of the underlying collateral and the originator rather than the direction of public markets.

Specialty Finance

Specialty finance is lending outside the traditional banking system, typically to businesses and consumers that banks serve poorly or not at all. Loans are secured against specific assets such as consumer, SME or real estate receivables, and the lender earns a contractual return on that collateral.

The Opportunity

Institutional private credit has not followed demand.

Large-cap direct lending holds roughly 58% of institutional AUM and mid-market 36%, leaving this segment structurally underweight.

The IMF put the European SME funding gap at approximately €930bn as of mid-2024, and bank retrenchment is widening it.

Most managers are built around sponsor-backed, syndicated deal flow and cannot replicate the direct-relationship origination this segment requires. That is what keeps the premium in place.

How We Deploy in Specialty Finance

We provide senior, asset-backed credit lines to non-bank lenders in consumer, SME and real estate credit. The loans they originate become the collateral securing the facility.

Each facility is underwritten on the originator’s track record and repayment capacity, with covenants and concentration limits agreed at the outset and monitored throughout. The investment team co-invests alongside clients.

Co-investors access the exposure through a Credit Linked Note issued from a ring-fenced Compartment of our Luxembourg securitisation vehicle. The coupon is funded by the loan cash flows, and facilities run for 12 to 36 months.

Investment Approach

Origination
We originate where underwriting discipline drives returns. We favour repeatable origination models with strong purchasing power, and we place more weight on the consistency and rigour of the credit process than on headline metrics.
Predictable Returns
Return expectations are set at the outset through contractual interest, secured principal and defined exit timelines. Any profit share is secondary to a standalone base case that is sufficient on its own.
Collateral Protection
We target over-collateralisation and limit co-investor exposure to costs that do not carry assets. Credit lines fund revenue-generating activity rather than overhead, with direct recourse to cash-flowing assets. We monitor collateral values and enforce covenants throughout the term.
Macroeconomic Resilience
Non-bank lenders often gain market share when banks retreat and liquidity tightens. We focus on cash-generative assets and underwrite for performance across economic cycles, not only in bull markets.

How We Operate

Every specialty finance facility follows the same four steps, from identifying the originator to the loan cash flows that pay co-investors.
Identify the Originator
We identify a non-bank lender in consumer, SME or real estate credit that is seeking an institutional credit line to expand their loan book.
Underwrite and Structure
We underwrite its origination record and repayment capacity, structure the facility and issue a Credit Linked Note.
Originator Deploys Capital
The borrower draws within agreed covenants and originates new loans. These loans act as the collateral for co-investors.
Cash Flows to Co-Investors
Loan cash flows fund the coupon. Principal is returned through amortisation or sale of the loans.

Types of Receivables We Fund

We focus on short-duration, asset-backed opportunities where repayment is supported by contractual cash flows, tangible collateral or legally enforceable receivables. The receivable types we consider include:
Consumer Credit Receivables
Credit cards, personal loans, auto loans and student loans.
Equipment Finance and Leasing
Loans and lease payments secured against income-producing equipment.
SME and Growth-Stage Business Lending
Loans to small and mid-sized enterprises supported by invoices, contracts, equipment or recurring revenue streams.
Trade and Invoice Receivables
Short-dated receivables from the sale of goods or services, including invoice finance and supply-chain-linked credit.
Royalties and Contractual Receivables
Predictable income streams from contractual obligations, including music royalties and payroll-linked receivables.
Distressed and Special Situations Credit
Non-performing or defaulted receivables acquired at a discount to par.
Litigation Finance Receivables
Contractually defined claims or settlements.
