Niche Credit Through Asset-Based Lending

Our strategy is built around corners of the credit market characterised by pricing and market inefficiencies, where capital deployment is structurally underweight relative to demand. This creates opportunities for enhanced risk-adjusted returns and diversification through exposure to niche credit.

We deploy capital within asset-based lending, principally across two sub-strategies: specialty finance and debt purchase. Each vertical carries its own return drivers, underwriting discipline and risk profile.

The Asset-Based Lending Opportunity

Asset-based lending is secured against identifiable assets and repaid from their cash flows. Each exposure is originated and structured directly, so returns reflect the quality of the underlying collateral and the originator rather than the direction of public markets.

Debt Purchase

Debt purchase is the buying of portfolios of non-performing or reperforming loans from banks and lenders, usually at a discount to face value. The buyer then collects on the loans, restructures them or sells them on, earning a return from the difference between the purchase price and what is recovered.

The Opportunity

NPL investments offer attractive returns through pricing inefficiencies.

Banks sell non-performing loans, typically those where the borrower is 90 days or more past due, to meet regulatory capital requirements and free up balance sheet capacity. This creates a steady supply of receivables that is largely independent of the broader credit cycle.

Pricing and servicing them well requires specialised infrastructure that most generalist credit managers have not built, which keeps competition for well-underwritten portfolios limited.

Returns are driven by the following:

Return Drivers

01
Valuation-Driven Discount
Portfolios are acquired below face value. Disciplined valuation at acquisition captures the pricing inefficiency and sets the return the portfolio has to deliver.
02
Efficient Servicing
Return depends on recoveries against the acquisition price. Specialised servicing and collection capability determines how much is recovered, and how quickly.
03
Reperforming Income
Where a borrower resumes scheduled payments, the loan produces ongoing contractual income in addition to recoveries.
04
Capital Growth
Value is realised on resale or securitisation of the portfolio once it has seasoned. A track record of recoveries and performance allows the portfolio to be priced with greater certainty on exit.

Investment Approach

Pricing Discipline
We price each portfolio on expected recoveries, not on the headline balance. Acquisition discount, collateral quality, vintage and jurisdiction are assessed at the outset, so that the base case return is supported by recoveries alone.
Servicing Capability
Return depends on collections, so we acquire alongside partners with a proven record in servicing non-performing and reperforming loans. A servicer’s capability, reporting and alignment of interest are assessed before we commit capital.
Security and Structure
Each portfolio is held in a ring-fenced vehicle, so co-investors hold a claim over a defined pool of receivables rather than over the seller. Covenants are agreed for each transaction, including concentration limits per borrower and per jurisdiction.
Cycle Independence
Supply is driven by bank balance sheet and regulatory capital needs rather than by the credit cycle. We target portfolios diversified across borrowers and jurisdictions, and we do not depend on a rising market to realise value.

How We Operate

Every debt purchase facility follows the same path, from the bank sale of the portfolio to exit.
Identify the Originator
We identify an originator that can negotiate the acquisition of non-performing loans directly from banks and lenders, whether unsecured or secured, and act as servicer or provide day-to-day oversight.
Underwrite
We assess the originator’s capacity to service the loans, or the ability of third-party servicers to collect on them, and underwrite the portfolio within our risk framework.
Extend Facility
We extend a facility of $5 to 25 million, secured by the cash flows and collateral of the portfolio, which is ring-fenced from the originator.
Recoveries Pay the Coupon
Once repayment behaviour on the loans is established, cash flows and recoveries from the portfolio pay the coupon to co-investors.
Exit
Once the portfolio has seasoned, exit is through resale, securitisation or natural amortisation, and principal is repaid to co-investors.
